Creating as Medicine - A Spell
There is something deeply orienting about the act of creating.
Whether we are making art, writing words, cooking a meal, shaping a space, building a business, or tending a project that matters to us, creation asks us to reach inward. It invites us to touch a part of ourselves that is supremely alive—a place where energy moves freely, where soul speaks before perfection has a chance to interrupt.
Creation does not require mastery. It does not ask us to be polished, efficient, or even particularly skilled. In fact, the more imperfect the offering, the more medicine it often carries. A crooked line, a clumsy sentence, a half-burnt loaf of bread, a tiny neon dragon painted on a bathtub wall—these are not failures. They are evidence of life moving through us.
The act itself is the medicine.
When we create, we loosen our grip. We let something move from the inside to the outside. We allow sensation, longing, grief, delight, confusion, and wonder to find form. Sometimes what emerges is playful and low-stakes; sometimes it is a love song born from our deepest ache, made only so that the ache no longer has to live solely inside our body.
In these moments, we remember how to be present.
Creation gently braids the mind, body, heart, and soul back together. Our hands engage. Our breath deepens. Our attention settles. For a little while, we are not performing, fixing, or optimizing—we are listening. We are responding. We are in relationship with ourselves.
This kind of making takes time. It takes energy. Often, it asks us to lean into discomfort: the discomfort of not knowing what will come out, of not liking what we’ve made, of letting ourselves be seen by our own eyes. But the insight gained through this process—the quiet truths that surface when we slow down enough to notice—are worth the investment.
Creating reminds us who we are beneath the roles, the expectations, and the noise. It reconnects us with our interiority. It orients us toward what feels alive, true, and meaningful right now—not someday, not when it’s perfect, but here.
You don’t have to create something useful.
You don’t have to create something beautiful.
You don’t have to create something that lasts.
You only have to create something honest.
And in doing so, you may find yourself a little more whole than you were before.
A Simple Spell for Creative Flow
You do not need special tools for this spell.
You do not need talent, training, or a finished product.
You only need willingness.
Begin by pausing.
Place one hand on your body—your chest, your belly, your thigh—somewhere you can feel yourself. Take one slow breath in, and one slow breath out.
If it feels right, say (aloud or silently):
I give myself permission to create without outcome.
I release the need for this to be good, useful, or seen.
I invite curiosity, play, and movement to pass through me.
Now choose one small act of creation.
Something low-stakes. Something imperfect by design.
A scribble. A sentence. A color. A sound. A rearranging. A mess.
As you create, imagine energy moving through you—not from effort, but from allowance. Let it surprise you. Let it wander. Let it stop when it wants to.
When you’re finished, place your hand back on your body and say:
Thank you for what moved.
Thank you for what I made.
The spell is complete.
Optional Ways to Play (No Pressure, Only Invitation)
Create for 5 minutes, then stop—even if you want more
Use a color you don’t usually choose
Make something that will be washed away, eaten, erased, or undone
Create somewhere unexpected (the floor, the shower wall, the margins)
Let the goal be sensation, not meaning
Happy creating ;)
